WHAT IS SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI)?
SI is a student success program that provides peer-led group study sessions for students enrolled in historically difficult courses. SI helps students of all backgrounds and skill levels to improve their understanding of the course material, as well as to increase the effectiveness of their study skills. The SI method, developed by the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1973, has been proven to raise overall grades and increase retention levels at Long Beach City College and various academic institutions worldwide.
HOW DOES SI WORK?
A trained SI leader attends the assigned class along with the students, and facilitates two SI sessions per week outside of class. These SI sessions utilize collaboration and other learning techniques to guide students through the material. The SI leader, who has previously earned an "A" in that course, will help students compare notes, discuss important concepts, prepare for exams, and develop better study strategies, all within a relaxed and friendly learning environment. Students also participate in games and activities that are designed to increase their comprehension of the class material. SI sessions are informal, attendance is voluntary, and best of all, the cost is FREE!
